Posted

Richard Albert Cardinal, 79, of Fountain Hills passed away peacefully at 9:45 p.m. on June 23, 2016.

“Dick” was born in Paterson, N.J., on Oct. 23, 1936. He was one of eight children born to Paul and Lorene (Lapham) Cardinal and always said he was “the oldest of the second half.”

The family moved to Montclair, N.J., where Dick attended Montclair HS, was on the tennis team and played the clarinet in the jazz band.

He graduated from Holy Cross College in Worcester, Mass., in 1958 where he was in ROTC. He then served proudly in the United States Air Force for two years.

He met Barbara at the Jersey Shore, and they were happily married for 53 years. They spent their first years living in East Orange, then Cedar Grove, N.J., where they started their family.

After an honorable discharge from the USAF, Dick worked at Burroughs and Itel as a marketing executive. A career move created new opportunities and a transfer to Deerfield, Ill. where he was Vice President at Automatic Data Processing.

Dick's family moved to Lincolnshire and then Long Grove, Ill. and finally retired to Fountain Hills, where they have lived for 11 years.

Dick is survived by his loving wife, Barbara; daughter, Cynthia Kennedy and her husband, Robert; daughter, Sharon Cardinal; son, David and wife, Karen; son, Stephen and his wife, Kesha; brothers, John and Paul Cardinal; and sisters, Anne Cardinal O’Connell and Carolyn Cardinal Walker; and seven wonderful grandchildren, Tara, Devon and Ronan Kennedy, Olivia and Jackson Cardinal, and Sophia and Audrey Cardinal.

Dick loved to paint, especially animal figures, landscapes and Cardinal birds. He was an active member of the Fountain Hills Art League and served as vice president for several years. He was also a member of The Club in Fountain Hills.

Playing the piano was his relaxation and playing golf was his physical therapy. He was known for cheeky sense of humor and deep abiding faith.

His creative and generous spirit will be celebrated at St. Bernard of Clairvaux Catholic Church, 10755 N. 124th St, Scottsdale on Thursday, June 30. Friends and family visitation will begin at 9 a.m. and a Mass will begin at 10:00 a.m. Following will be a reception at The Club, 17005 E. Enterprise Dr, Fountain Hills, AZ 85268.

Additionally, a family and friends visitation at 9 a.m. and Mass at 10 a.m. will be held at St. Patrick’s Church in Lake Forest, Ill. on Monday, July 11. Internment at St. Mary Cemetery in Lake Forest, Ill. will follow the Mass.

Donations in Dick’s memory may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 9808 N. 95th St., Scottsdale, AZ 85258,
