Posted

John Harner Colman, 76, of Phoenix, passed away Nov. 10, 2015 in Phoenix.

He was born on Nov. 3, 1939 to the late William and Jane (Harner) Colman in Buffalo, N.Y. and was raised in Xenia and Lima, Ohio.

He attended school at Marquette University, University of the Americas in Mexico City, Mexico and later received his Master’s Degree from the University of Alabama.

He was a graduate assistant coach at Alabama under legendary football coach Paul “Bear” Bryant.

“Coach,” as John preferred to be called, served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a true patriot and loved his country.

In the late ‘60s, Bear Bryant assisted Coach Colman in landing the head American football coaching position at the American School Foundation in Mexico City. In addition to being the school’s head football coach, he also served as vice principal.

Coach Colman led the Fighting Bears football teams to three consecutive league championships.

Subsequently, the ASF football stadium was named John Colman Stadium - Home of the Fighting Bears, in honor of Coach’s success at the American School in the ‘70s.

Coach Colman led a talented group of men, and many went on to play for major college programs such as Purdue, North Texas State and several successful smaller college programs.

However, Coach was most proud of the men that went on to be successful husbands, businessmen and champions of their communities.

When Coach finished his coaching career, he founded a personal training studio in Fountain Hills called Champions Fitness Club/Focus 21.

He was a proud member of the Fountain Hills community, had a passion for his business and the people of Fountain Hills.

Coach was happiest when he was around people. He loved coaching, teaching, inspiring and meeting new faces.

John is survived by his loving spouse of 48 years, Amalia “Yaya;” son, Bryant Colman of Phoenix; daughter, Kathy Colman, and her spouse, Randy Skolnik; and many other loving family and friends.

There will be no immediate memorial services; however, the family will send out communication for a Coach Colman Celebration in early 2016.

Letters of condolences can be sent to Amalia Colman, 6250 N. 19th Ave., Unit 252, Phoenix, AZ 85015.
