Johanna D. Hummel

Posted

Johanna D. Hummel, 74, of Fountain Hills left this world to be with Jesus on Dec. 10, 2014. Born Feb. 5, 1940 in Benton Harbor, Mich., she was the daughter of the late Andrew Carl Freitag and Dorothy Lydia Freitag.

She is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Philip Louis Hummel III; four sons, Philip Hummel IV and his wife Carrie of Villa Park, Calif., David Hummel and wife Patti of Scottsdale, Matthew Hummel and wife Suzanne of Fountain Hills, Christopher Hummel and wife Rebecca of Grand Haven, Mich.; one daughter, Mary Laarman and husband Chris of Ionia, Mich.; a sister, Geri Smith and husband Jim of Estes Park, Colo.; a brother, Steve Freitag and wife Deb of Macomb, Mich.; and 12 grandchildren, Joshua, Nicholas, Logan, Lauren, Julia, David, Alexis, Ethan, Raina, Victoria, Brandon and Olivia.

Johanna met her husband Philip at Michigan State University. After a short courtship they were married. Phil joined the Army and was stationed in Germany. Two years later while in Germany they welcomed the birth of their first child, Phil. After completing his military service they relocated back in Michigan where they raised their family.

Upon retiring, they did two years of missionary work in Guam. After completing their service in Guam they moved to Arizona where they enjoyed traveling and year-round warm weather.

They continued doing missionary work with Neighborhood Ministries in Phoenix. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and they all loved playing games and baking cookies with her.

She enjoyed reading and valued education. She put her educational goals on hold to raise her family, then fulfilled her dream and received her bachelor’s degree at Arizona State University when she was 70 years old.

She leaves us too early but died peacefully knowing she was going to be joining Jesus in Heaven.

Memorial services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 19, 2014 at Harvest Bible Chapel, 15202 N. Fountain Hills Blvd., with Pastor Justin Erickson officiating.
