Jean Thomsen

Posted

Jean Louise Miller Thomsen, a resident of Fountain Hills for the past 32 years, died peacefully in a hospice setting on Oct. 18, 2017. Jean’s husband, Dr. Steve Thomsen, was at her side. She enjoyed an active and productive life centered in art, business, travel and her family. Variety and challenge were at the heart of all pursuits.

Jean was born in Williamsport, Pa. on June 9, 1931. Both her father and grandfather were artists which spurred an early interest in art. After moving to Newburgh, N.Y. with her parents she attended local schools where she loved singing in musicals and church programs. She was voted most popular girl in her senior class. Many busy years followed, including a marriage and divorce.

Employment with The Hudson River Valley Commission was a position Jean cherished.

Jean and Steve met at a Parents Without Partners meeting and were married in California in December 1970. After a move to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Jean began a lifelong dream of attending college. She graduated from Vassar College with majors in Art History and Education. Two years later she obtained a master’s degree in administration.

She was a public school art teacher, real estate agent and manager of the local C.E.T.A. program where she supervised 500 participants. For relaxation Jean enjoyed sailing on the Hudson with friends.

In 1985, the Thomsens moved to Fountain Hills and Jean continued to work in real estate. She also taught art in her home studio. She was a founding member of the Fountain Hills Art League and served as president for the first 10 years. She was a docent at the Scottsdale Center for the Arts for 25 years and exhibited in many art shows.

Besides her husband, Jean leaves four daughters, Denise Raymond Barnes, Suzette Raymond Nunez, Kari Thomsen Jacobsen and Elizabeth Thomsen. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Leila Holler, Phillipe Nunez, and Joseph Jacobson and six great grandchildren.

Jean’s last hurrah took place at the 2015 LaPlata County Fair in Colorado. Her painting “SHEEP RUN” was awarded Best in Show. Jean couldn’t have been happier!
