John Francis Dugan

John Francis Dugan, 85, peacefully entered into eternal life Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013. He was a family man, pure and simple, devoted to his wife of 51 years, Ella Joan, and his children, Stephen, Alicia and Kevin.

John was born Sept. 10, 1927 in New York City. After graduating from St. Regis High School in 1945 he entered the U.S. Navy serving on the USS Kearsarge, being honorably discharged at the end of WWII.

John attended Manhattan College, NYC earning a Bachelor’s Degree in electrical engineering. He then joined Sperry Gyroscope Corp. as an aeronautical electronic field engineer working mostly with the Air Force and Navy.

He continued his education at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, Pa. obtaining a Master’s Degree in industrial administration. Working for Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation in Pittsburgh he held positions in capital budgeting and planning; mathematical economic model development; commercial research, marketing and planning.

In 1967 John moved his family to Pittsford, N.Y. where he joined Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, N.Y. While there he worked in management systems development; marketing intelligence; and with the company’s Office of Innovation, retiring from Kodak in 1989.

While living in Pittsford, John enjoyed being with friends and family, especially taking his family on hiking/backpacking/camping trips in the Adirondack mountains and skiing the snow covered slopes in Lake Placid and Bristol Mountain, where he volunteered for 18 years with the National Ski Patrol.

Most especially John enjoyed watching and cheering for his children in soccer games and swim meets. John’s family was his life and always came first.

In 1994 he and his wife moved to Fountain Hills to enjoy their retirement years.

John was preceded in death by his father, Walter Tunney, his mother, Bertha Tunney, and brother-in-law, James Sullivan.

He is survived by his wife, Ella Joan; sons, Stephen (Michelle) and Kevin (Stacy); and his daughter, Alicia (Ron) Sykes; his sisters, Dorothy Sullivan and Rose (Bill) Connors; four grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 20, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 10815 N. 84th Street, Scottsdale.
