Posted

Eugene “Gene” Howard Warren Jr. of Fountain Hills passed away Sept. 7, 2014 after a long battle with cancer.

He is survived by his wife, Linda; daughters, Brooke Krueger of Riverside, Calif., Kristen Verdugo of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.; and his sister, Patty Miller of Indianapolis, Ind. Other survivors include his beloved grandchildren, Dylan, Chelsea, Dominic, Cheyenne, Keegan, Justin and Lindsey, and an extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins.

Gene was born Jan. 1, 1943 in Oak Park, Ill. to Eugene H. Warren and Lorene Long Warren. Many of his fondest memories of boyhood were the summers he spent with his grandparents, Clarence “Pop” Long and Nell Long in Winamac, Ind.

He went to high school at Northwestern Military Academy, attended Miami University of Ohio where he met his wife, Linda, and subsequently earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from Indiana University and a Ph.D. in economics from Purdue University.

After graduation Gene became a professor of economics, teaching at several universities, and later served as an economist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

He authored the book “The Solar Alternative” with colleague Amy Walton in 1982. He later started an economic policy and consulting firm, Thomas, Warren + Associates, which became TW+A Research when he moved the business to Phoenix in 1999.

Gene became a national leader in the economics of retirement, giving seminars and advising communities on how to attract retirees to stimulate their local economies.

Gene’s passions were studying history, playing cards and exploring the desert, an interest that he inherited from his grandfather. After retiring, Gene became an avid collector and eBay seller of Native American art, spending hours at local auctions bidding and haggling, which he loved.

A memorial service will be held at the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church, 13001 Fountain Hills Blvd., Saturday, Sept. 20, at 11 a.m., followed by a light luncheon. In lieu of flowers the family welcomes donations in Gene’s memory to Hospice of the Valley or Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church.
