Town expects positive impact from Slide

Posted

With up to 4,000 people expected to attend the Slide the City event here April 25, the Town of Fountain Hills will be collecting sales tax from vendors selling at the event as well as from ticket sales for the slide, according to town Recreation Supervisor Rachael Goodwin.

Goodwin said those involved in the event had obtained a town business license and that will be used to collect the town’s share of sales tax.

“Unlike other jurisdictions that collect their sales tax directly, the town requires that taxes be reported and paid to the state and then we get our portion from the state,” Goodwin said.

The Slide the City organizer has also paid all permit fees for the event, according to Goodwin. She said the town had not waived any of the fees and the organizer had not asked for any. A total on the permit fees was not immediately available.

Also, according to Event Director Nichelle Jensen, the event organizer is paying the costs for security and emergency medical services.

She said the Fountain Hills-Rural/Metro Fire Department is providing two paramedics and two EMTs to be present for the event.

Jensen said the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office is providing off-duty deputies for security. She said at least four deputies will be hired, but the final number will be determined by the town.

“If they would like us to have more (than four), we are happy to hire more,” Jensen said.

The company has also hired eight people from a private security firm for safety and security along the perimeter of the slide, according to Jensen.

Current parking arrangements include Fountain Hills High School, Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church, Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

A shuttle will be running by these parking lots to take people to the slide entry on Palisades Boulevard near Golden Eagle Boulevard. Jensen said they are also working on additional parking that was not finalized as of this writing.

Parking by those attending the Slide the City event will be prohibited in the residential neighborhoods bounded by Palisades and Fountain Hills boulevards.

Those coming to town for the event will be asked to use Fountain Hills Boulevard to access one of the available parking lots, which are off Fountain Hills Boulevard, Hampstead and Bainbridge drives.

Palisades Boulevard will be closed in both directions from midnight to midnight Saturday, April 25. The slide will be open to the public from 12 noon to 5 p.m.
