Huge storm cancels Oktoberfest
Storm damage
Fountain Park scene
Wind, rain damage
Posted
A huge storm moved into the Valley Saturday afternoon, bringing with it torrential winds, lightning and damaging rain.
The Fountain Hills Oktoberfest has been canceled as a mini lake formed adjacent to Fountain Lake, flooding the entire venue. The town's giant shade cover blew down, porta-potties were tipped over, trees were uprooted and tents were strewn about like wrecked pipe cleaners.
Food items and other debris were floating in the flotsam where revelers Friday night ate bratwursts and drank German beer.
A Sheriff's deputy around 3:30 was blocking off Parkview Avenue at Saguaro Blvd., and the National Weather Service issued a flash flood alert for the area. Trees were uprooted around town, including several on Palisades Blvd. near Four Sons as well as Saguaro Blvd.
