The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality has issued a High Pollution Advisory for particulate pollution for Saturday, Dec. 30 and continuing through New Years Day, Monday, Jan. 1.

This alert advises that particulate or dust levels in the air are expected to exceed the standard considered unhealthy for sensitive individuals over the weekend.

Active children and adults and people with respiratory disease such as asthma should limit prolonged exertion outdoors.

The High Pollution Advisory for the holiday triggers the Maricopa County restrictions and advisories related to dust control including:

Avoid activities that generate dust, such as driving on dirt roads.

* Stabilize loose soils.

* Recreational off-highway vehicle (OHV) use is prohibited during the advisory period.

* The use of leaf blowers on governmental properties is prohibited during the advisory period.

* Eliminate fireplace and wood stove use.

* Drive as little as possible: car pool, use public transit or telecommute. For information on transportation alternatives, visit Valley Metro: www.ShareTheRide.com
