It was announced this weekend that former Fountain Hills Mayor Wally Nichols passed away. Nichols, who has been battling health issues, recently fell and struck his head.

On Facebook, Nichols' family made the following announcement:

"Dad chose to leave peacefully on Earth Day, full moon, Passover, from his bed on Drinkwater Blvd. after suffering from a traumatic brain injury received after hitting his head on a rock next to a large turtle sculpture.

"The day he died, a box of black T-shirts arrived via UPS with 'It's a NICHOLS thing' emblazoned on them, sized perfectly for every family member including grandkids, all gathered here in Arizona. We walked around Fountain Park this morning wearing them in his memory."
