Chamber agreement on council agenda

Posted

When the Town Council meets Thursday it is scheduled to discuss the request from the Chamber of Commerce to terminate its professional services agreement for tourism services.

The council may provide direction to staff regarding the matter, but there is no specified action to consider.

In a letter dated Oct. 21, Chamber President/CEO Frank Ferrara asked that the Chamber be allowed to terminate the agreement effective Dec. 31.

The council had allocated $103,000 to the tourism agreement in the 2013/14 fiscal year budget.

Town Manager Ken Buchanan will be outlining for the council steps and strategies the town may be able to take in picking up the tourism program for the remainder of the fiscal year.

The council will be hearing a financial report for the first quarter of the fiscal year at this week’s session.

Deputy Town Manager/Finance Director Julie Ghetti is reporting that while economic indicators remain positive in retail and restaurant activity, the overall revenue picture for the first quarter remains sluggish.

General Fund revenues are 2 percent lower than the same quarter last year, and are 10 percent below budget. The General Fund expenditures are also down to help offset the drop in revenue.

The council will also be considering a resolution that amends the Town Council Rules of Procedure.

The changes come as a result of a request to streamline the process for those applying for positions on the town’s boards and commissions. As a result of the review, staff has proposed a number of other revisions to update and streamline the rules.

Councilwoman Ginny Dickey has asked that the council discuss the possibility of making more applications for awards related to the areas of environmental excellence and regional partnerships.

The Town Council meets Thursday, Nov. 7, at 6:30 p.m. in council chambers at Town Hall. The meeting is open to the public.
