A prank phone call led to about $15,000 in damage to the lobby and offices at the Comfort Inn on Shea Boulevard in Fountain Hills.

According to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office someone called the hotel Sunday afternoon and claimed to be a representative of its alarm company.

The told the desk clerk they needed to “reset” the fire alarm system and asked them to pull the alarm lever, which they did.

The caller then told the clerk that to prevent all the fire sprinklers from going off they needed to activate one of the sprinkler heads by breaking it. The clerk did as they were asked, causing the flood.

Fountain Hills Fire Department was called to shut down the system and repair the sprinkler head. Firefighters also helped in removing water from the building.

*On Tuesday, Jan. 14, a Laveen woman was found in her car along the Beeline Highway north of Fountain Hills two days after she went off the road and into a wash. The woman reportedly left Mesa to return home in the West Valley on Sunday but got lost. Residents in nearby Goldfield Ranch heard a horn honking and found the woman in her vehicle. She was taken to the hospital for treatment as she had not taken medication in two days.

*On Wednesday, Jan. 15, a resident of the 3000 block of north 150th Street reported a pattern of harassment from his neighbor. A dispute between the two dates back 10 years and the man reported the neighbor was seen on his property Jan. 15.

*On Wednesday, Jan. 15, a Fountain Hills woman reported a financial consultant had fraudulently taken money from her account totaling more than $17,000.

*On Wednesday, Jan. 15, a resident of the 17000 block of San Marcus Drive reported someone entered his fenced back yard and removed lawn furniture.

*On Thursday, Jan. 16, deputies investigated a vehicle accident at Saguaro Boulevard and Indian Wells Drive. A vehicle traveling north on Saguaro collided with a second vehicle that was turning onto Saguaro from Indian Wells.

On Friday, Jan. 17, a Phoenix man was arrested for DUI traveling on Shea Boulevard near Arista Drive.

*On Sunday, Jan. 19, deputies received a report that a stop sign at El Lago Boulevard and La Montana Drive had been struck by a vehicle. The motorist had left the scene but called later and reported the incident.

*On Sunday, Jan. 5, a clerk at a convenience store held a credit card that had been reported stolen. The customer who attempted to use it left.

*On Thursday, Jan. 9, a Phoenix man was cited and released for disorderly conduct after he got into an argument with a Sheriff’s deputy outside a Fountain Hills grocery store. The deputy had responded to a report the man was getting in the way of traffic in the parking lot.

*On Tuesday, Jan. 14, a male juvenile, age 12, reported he was assaulted and robbed as he was walking home along Saguaro Boulevard after school. The boy reported two masked suspects shot him in the leg with an airsoft rifle and took $10 from his wallet. The incident took place near Pepperwood Circle and Oakwood Lane. He suffered a minor leg injury from the pellet shot that initially left him unable to walk.

*On Tuesday, Jan. 14, a Fountain Hills woman reported electronic items valued at more than $1,700 were taken from her residence in the 14000 block of Kendall Drive.

*On Tuesday, Jan. 21, a deputy on patrol observed a truck had driven through a fence and onto the Tonto Verde Golf Course near Rio Verde Drive and Forest Road. Deputies were unable to locate any occupants of the vehicle. Next morning deputies responded to a report of a man sitting on the curb along the street in Tonto Verde. He was identified as the driver of the truck.

*On Monday, Jan. 13, a resident reported a bicycle valued at $200 stolen from the Fountain Hills Middle School. Surveillance video of the area showed someone who appeared older than a student remove the bicycle from the rack.

*On Friday, Jan. 3, deputies received a report from a Fort McDowell woman that someone had assaulted her son and left him in a park in Fountain Hills. The 16-year-old was found by family members lying in the park with injuries to his head and face. He was taken home but was not responding well the next day and was taken to the hospital for treatment. He had no recall of what had happened.

*On Saturday, Jan. 11, deputies responded to a report of an injured man at a bar on Parkview Avenue. They found the man in the bathroom with a severe laceration to the head. Witnesses said he was hit in the head with a bottle thrown by another man. He was taken to the hospital by fire department ambulance for treatment of the wound.

*On Wednesday, Jan. 22, a deputy approached a vehicle parked on the wrong side of the street on Calle Del Prado and found a man sleeping in the vehicle. He also discovered the man was in possession of marijuana and a smoking pipe. He was arrested for possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

*On Thursday, Jan. 9, a resident of the 13000 block of Hamilton Drive reported someone had stolen checkbooks, an iPod, cell phone and jewelry from his residence. He reported a houseguest was asleep in the residence at the time and some of her possessions were also stolen.

*On Tuesday, Jan. 21, deputies investigated a collision involving three vehicles at Fountain Hills Boulevard and Bainbridge Drive. A woman driving north on Fountain Hills Boulevard turned left in front of a southbound vehicle and they collided, then striking a third vehicle stopped at the stop sign on Bainbridge. One woman was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries, and a second woman was treated at the scene. A man driving the third vehicle was not injured.

*On Wednesday, Jan. 22, deputies received a report from the Fountain Hills Charter School that two school zone speed signs were stolen from school property.

*On Friday, Jan. 24, a Fountain Hills woman reported her ex-boyfriend was harassing her via phone calls and text messages, saying he was cursing and using abusive language. He reportedly sent 25 messages over a 10-hour period. He also talked with a Sheriff’s deputy five times during a 45-minute period he was taking the report from the woman. The man was arrested at his Mesa residence after he was located and detained by Mesa Police.
