Ellison Creek Trail
We hit the Ellison Creek Trail north of Payson. Most of the short hike is a walk on a jeep trail.
The road leads down from a gate at Cold Springs Camp Ground. Though the “trail” is nothing exciting, it offers some nice views of the pine-covered hills.
Once at the bottom of the hill, start looking for a side trail off to the right. Several are there. These side trails lead into a small campground and then to the creek beyond.
The creek bed is wide and full of boulders worn smooth from years of rushing waters. Hop the boulders and head upstream.
About 100 yards up is Ellison Falls.
The falls cascade into a large swimming hole. The water is crystal clear.
Past visitors have fashioned a fallen tree into a ladder that leads out of the pool and up the small cliff just above the falls. It looks as though anyone foolhardy enough could slide down the last portion of the waterfall into the pool.
During our trip, both the air and the water were too chilly to enjoy a dip, but we’ll likely head up this summer for a break from the heat (I can’t wait to try that slide down the falls.)
Because of its accessibility, the area is extremely popular during the hotter months, especially on weekends (read: loud music and beer). So those looking for a tranquil escape should only consider the trip during the week.
Also, the creek bed could become awfully slippery after a rain, so be aware.
To get there, take the Beeline Highway to Payson. Turn right at the Houston Mesa turnoff (about two miles past the junction of highways 87 and 260). Follow 8.2 miles to Forest Road 420, which is just past the ‘Second Crossing’ sign. Turn right at the message board and drive a short distance in and park.
From there, just walk on the road and follow down the hill. Roundtrip distance is less than two miles.
There is no entry fee. And there is no restroom available.
This hike was first featured May 2004 and revised February 2007.
