There is a small showroom in Scottsdale Airpark just filled with big ideas.
The business, Desert Shade Window Coverings, Inc., is a full line custom window covering company. The firm offers hundreds of options of window treatments. The owners, Marshall Price and Bailey Cooner, relocated the business in April. They had operated out of a home for 9 ½ years but outgrew the space.
But that hasn’t changed their business plan, other than to provide an area where clients could view products and work with Cooner, the designer, or Price, who is the installation expert. Clients can see for themselves the kinds of treatments available. Cooner also provides in-home consultations.
Desert Shade carries low-end mini-blinds all the way up to high-end draperies and shutters. It runs the full spectrum of interior window treatments, and offers solar screens, as well.
“We do everything start to finish,” Price says. “We can visit the customer in his home, or they can come here. After the selections are made and the pieces are here, we do the installation, follow-up and customer service.”
Price said he and Cooner have done small jobs, such as one window treatment, along with a full house of treatments, as well as commercial work.
Desert Shade has a wide variety of window treatments from wood blinds, wood shutters, woven wood shades, privacy sheers and motorized shades.
“The motorized shades are very popular,” Price said. “They’re battery operated, so they run smoothly, and there is no electrical installation or cords.”
The shades use either a timing device or a remote control to open and close them. There also are sun sensors available to automatically raise or lower them.
Plantation shutters still are popular, and the industry continues to create new and different window coverings all the time. There are panel track shades which slide to the side. There also are roll-up shades made from exotic fabrics, synthetics or wood.
“We create any look imaginable from formal to casual, and from contemporary to more traditional,” Price said.
While window coverings add to the look of a home’s interior, they also provide privacy and energy efficiency.
There are attractive window coverings to provide privacy, an outside view and filter out much of the sun’s radiant heat, resulting in significant reduction in energy bills.
Desert Shade features manufacturers such as Hunter Douglas, M&B/Alta, Fashion Tech, Louver Drape, Levolor and Graber, which all are backed by warranties.
Hunter Douglas currently is running a sale, which features savings up to $100 on selected products. Additionally, Desert Shade offers specials and sales from time to time.
Both owners have extensive experience in the business. Price started as an installer’s helper when he was in high school. He became an installer for another company, which ultimately led him to opening his own business with Cooner.
Cooner’s father is in the window covering business in Montreal, Canada, so she gravitated toward having her own company. The two combined forces, and they have built a following throughout the Valley.
Desert Shade is located at 15905 N. Greenway-Hayden Loop, Suite 107. The showroom is open by appointment. Appointments and information are available by calling (480) 423-1750. Visit www.desertwindowcoverings.com, for more details.
