It’s not often that you have the opportunity to chat up a group of super heroes, have lunch with a Stormtrooper, then listen to Doc Brown from “Back to the Future” share some wisdom, but those are exactly the kind of experiences available at any given moment during the annual Phoenix Comicon.

The 2015 Phoenix Comicon event was the biggest yet, hosting thousands of enthusiasts from around the country for four days of celebrating all things fantasy, sci-fi, comics, movies, books, art and beyond.

Hosted out of the Phoenix Convention Center from May 28-31, this year’s Comicon grew in terms of attendees and physical size.

Along with a massive exhibitor hall where visitors could peruse hundreds of booths boasting all sorts of swag and memorabilia, one could easily occupy their time dropping into the countless panels spread throughout the weekend, get an autograph or picture with some of their favorite celebrities, or just stare at the thousands of folks who decided to come in costume.

Having grown too big for the Convention Center itself, this annual celebration of all things nerdy now takes up space in ballrooms at surrounding hotels, as well as outdoor events including a car show, the beloved zombie walk, concerts, costume contests and more.

It’s a magical melting pot of sorts, where fans of steampunk and the Harry Potter universe can mingle with Trekkies, anime buffs, comic fiends and horror hounds.

In short, there’s a little something for everyone.

And while the big show was hosted under the bright lights of downtown Phoenix, you could still do a little star gazing with autograph sessions and Q&A panels.

This year’s celebrity guests included the likes of Ron Perlman, Christopher Lloyd, Edward James Olmos, members of the “Rocky Horror Picture Show” cast, Jason Isaacs, Karl Urban and more.

It’s a lot to experience but, if you ask the folks who brave the crowds to take in all of the excitement, they’ll likely tell you it’s well worth the effort.

Dan Hall (Scottsdale), for instance, said that 2015 was his first trip to Phoenix Comicon. He could only make it out for one day, which he said kept him plenty busy.

“I did a lot of everything, basically,” Hall said.

“I did everything I could. I checked out all sorts of different exhibits. I was overwhelmed. I had to collect my thoughts and I was like, whoa, I didn’t think it would be this big. It was awesome.”

Hall said he was floored by the number of fans who came out in costume, too.

“It’s impressive to see all of these people get dressed up for the event,” he added.

“You’ve got good vibes all day long. Everyone was upbeat and just having a good time. Yeah, I’d do this again in a heartbeat. But I’d want to do more than one day next time. You definitely need more than one day for Comicon.”

As a vendor from Prescott, Jessica Kistner said she enjoyed her Phoenix Comicon 2015 from the other side of a booth.

“I was here for all four days,” Kistner said on Sunday afternoon.

“Yes, I am very tired at this point, but it’s all worth it.”

Kistner said that 2015 was her fourth year attending the show.

“Everyone here comes for their own hobbies,” she said.

“That’s what they all have in common. Whether it’s comics, gaming, movies, anything; they’re all fans of something.”

Sitting across the table from Kistner was Michael Aery (Phoenix), who said that the 2015 show was his first.

“I came to just enjoy the atmosphere and the scenery,” he added.

“You hear about it enough and you’ve just got to see it for yourself. And it was spectacular; better than any way I could describe it.”

Aery said he spent most of his time spread across four days of attending on the showroom floor.

“The people are the best part of Comicon,” he said.

“They make everything so much better. And there’s always something new to see.”

To folks who haven’t attended yet, Aery’s message was simple.

“Do it,” he said.

“It’s spectacular.”

While the 2016 Phoenix Comicon is now a year away, fans have a new tradition to look forward to this winter with the return of Phoenix Comicon Fan Fest, which will be a more low-key event hosted out of the University of Phoenix Stadium in December.
