The new Fountain Hills Unified School District travel bus is ready to roll, finally unveiled during a special ceremony hosted in front of the high school on Friday, March 20.

Sporting a spiffy silver, blue and white paint job, the FHUSD logo and proudly proclaiming it houses the “Fountain Hills Falcons,” the new travel bus rolled up to a crowd of about a hundred onlookers eager to check it out in late March.

After a few words from Athletic Booster Club President Dr. Steve Feyrer-Melk, Athletic Director Mike Briguglio and Dwight Johnson of the Verne C. Johnson Family Foundation, guests were invited to check out the bus in person.

On board, everyone got to sit in the new coach-style seats, with seatbelts, as well as feel the icy blast of the enhanced AC unit onboard.

Back in the fall, Dwight Johnson proposed a donation on behalf of the Verne C. Johnson Family Foundation to provide the enhancements for the local district’s travel bus. The enhancements would come at no cost to the district while allowing local athletes to travel more comfortably and safely across the state.

The Booster Club got in on the action, pledging to provide half of the expenses for the project that totaled about $55,000. To get the process in motion as quickly as possible, Feyrer-Melk explained that the Johnson Foundation decided to pay the full cost upfront and extend an interest-free loan to the organization geared at supporting local athletics.

Moving forward, the travel bus will be used for athletics, as well as various extracurricular activities as needed. Along with keeping students more comfortable and safe, the new paint job will let everyone know that the Fighting Falcons are in town.

Fundraising

In order to provide its share of the funding, the Athletic Booster Club has begun a fundraising drive called the “Write-a-Check Campaign.”

Rather than organize an elaborate event, the local organization is asking anyone interested in supporting the cause to simply make out a check knowing that their contribution will go directly to the benefit of every student/athlete that rides on the bus.

Families, organizations, clubs and businesses interested in making a larger contribution are also encouraged to take part, with a recognition program currently in the works.

Those interested in donating to the travel bus are asked to contact Dr. Steve Feyrer-Melk at drsteve17@gmail.com or call 602-819-5578.
